The Color Scheme Game Review
If you caught our Timberdoodle unboxing post, then you already know how excited we were to get into everything in this year’s kit.
But there was one item I didn’t expect to love quite as much as I do—and that’s The Color Scheme board game.

At first glance, it looked like a colorful, minimalistic game board with some wood blocks. But after spending time with it, I can confidently say this is one of those rare games that challenges your logic, sharpens focus, and actually gets your kids (and yourself) thinking in completely new ways—all while having fun.

Let me show you what I mean.
First Impressions: A Gorgeous, Thoughtful Design
When you open the box, you’re greeted with a vibrant wooden board, six colored game pieces in bold rainbow hues, and a set of cube-like code blocks marked with “X” and “O” on the sides.

There’s also a soft canvas storage pouch for easy clean-up and portability—moms, you know how important that is!

Everything about the design is intentional. The blocks feel high-quality and durable, and the bold primary colors instantly grab your child’s attention.
Plus, no batteries, no screens, and no tiny parts to lose? Yes, please.
What Is The Color Scheme?
This game is part memory challenge, part logic puzzle, and part strategy.
It’s designed for two players, ages 8+, and the goal is to be the first to move all six of your color blocks into the correct spaces by uncovering and interpreting hidden color clues from your opponent’s code cubes.

Each round feels a little like mental gymnastics—your child has to remember which colors were revealed, strategize their next move, and think ahead to avoid accidentally helping the other player. And while it’s simple in setup, the gameplay is surprisingly deep.

How to Play (And Why My Kids Love It)
We had to read the instructions a couple of times to fully get it—but once we got into a groove, the kids were hooked.
Here’s the basic idea:
- Each player takes a set of six code-cubes and lines them up hidden-side down on their side of the board.
- The six color blocks get placed randomly in the center spaces, leaving one space open.
- Players take turns revealing the color under one cube and then moving one of the color blocks into the open space—ideally matching what they just discovered.
- The goal is to match the correct color block to the hidden cube’s color based on memory, deduction, and movement strategy.

There’s a rhythm to the game, and it gets more engaging with every turn.
What It’s Teaching My Kids (Without Them Even Noticing)
This game is like a secret homeschool weapon. It teaches:
- Memory: Keeping track of which color lies beneath each cube requires laser focus.
- Logic & Strategy: Every move matters. You can’t just wing it—you need to think ahead.
- Focus & Emotional Regulation: My kids were frustrated at first when they forgot a color, but they kept trying. That resilience muscle? Strengthened every round.
- Turn-Taking & Patience: Ideal for siblings or even a parent-kid round while you sip your afternoon coffee.
And can we talk about how refreshing it is to find a game that doesn’t feel overstimulating or chaotic? The quiet concentration that fills the room while we’re playing is golden.
Final Thoughts: A Must-Have Timberdoodle Pick
The Color Scheme is now a go-to in our homeschool rhythm. It’s perfect for brain breaks, rainy day logic work, and even weekend family game nights.
It’s compact enough to travel with, beautiful enough to leave out on display, and mentally stimulating without ever feeling like a chore.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
Especially if you’re already piecing together your Timberdoodle curriculum or just want a smart, engaging logic game that gets everyone thinking. I’d honestly buy this game even outside of Timberdoodle—it’s that good.
