Wholesome Adventure Books for Tweens
If you’ve ever stood in the library wondering which books are appropriate for your tween, you’re not alone.
As kids get older, it can become harder to find stories that are full of adventure, imagination, mystery, and courage without romance becoming a major focus.
While every family has different preferences, our family loves books that let kids simply enjoy being kids.
During one of our recent library trips, we came home with a stack of exciting new adventures, and it inspired me to start keeping a running list of wholesome books we’ve loved or are excited to read.
My hope is that this resource helps other parents, grandparents, teachers, and homeschool families discover stories their tweens will genuinely enjoy.
Whether your child loves magical worlds, thrilling adventures, survival stories, or unforgettable mysteries, these books are a wonderful place to start.

What We Look for in Tween Books
When we’re choosing books for our kids, we usually look for stories that include:
- Adventure
- Fantasy
- Mystery
- Courage
- Friendship
- Imagination
- Strong character development
- Positive life lessons
- Little to no romance
- Age-appropriate themes
Every family has different standards, so I always encourage parents to preview books before handing them to their children. These are simply books our family has enjoyed or is excited to explore together.

Raising a Reader One Story at a Time
Our reading journey did not begin with the books on this list. Over the years, we have enjoyed everything from funny early chapter books to imaginative stories filled with adventure.
These photos are from an earlier season of reading with my daughter, and they remind me how naturally a love of books can grow when children are given stories that meet them where they are.
As her reading level and interests have changed, we have continued searching for books that feel exciting, age-appropriate, and full of imagination. The books may be different now, but the joy of discovering a new story together has stayed the same.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Bilbo Baggins’ unexpected journey is one of the greatest adventure stories ever written. It’s packed with dwarves, dragons, riddles, and courage while keeping the focus on the adventure itself.
Septimus Heap Series by Angie Sage
One of our favorite recommendations for kids who love magical worlds. This series follows an apprentice wizard through castles, ancient magic, and exciting quests with very little romance.
TodHunter Moon Series by Angie Sage
If your child enjoys Septimus Heap, this companion series continues the magical world with new characters, exciting adventures, and plenty of mystery.
The Green Ember by S.D. Smith
A beautifully written fantasy series about brave rabbits fighting to restore hope to their kingdom. Themes of courage, sacrifice, family, and faith make this a favorite among many homeschooling families.

Why We Love Library Days
Some of the most magical childhood memories aren’t made at expensive attractions.
